Lifestyle Tip of the Week

Happy Fall Equinox everyone!  Today, is the first day of fall and for some a change in weather and lifestyles.  For us here in Southern  California, it feels like the heart of summer.  Nonetheless, our routines and needs should change for the next few months.  Fall is the time to reap the benefits of the hard work and growth this year.  Include others in your routines.  Get your family, your co-workers, and your neighbors to join you in your health endeavors.  Relationships are important to build on right now, and what not a better way to do this by exercising, healthy cooking, or simply enjoying the company of others.

As the weather changes, the days get shorter, the exercise will change for many of us.  We’ll have to step inside to get our exercise in.  So some ideas would be dance classes, yoga, pilates, kick boxing, and indoor cycling.  Also, remember that household activities will suffice.  Gardening, shoveling snow and other projects will work.

Seasonal foods will become abundant all around us.  Fruits and vegetables should be a large part of our diet.  If it is green, eat it.  Occasional nuts and seeds will be good but be aware of portion sizes (a small handful is enough).  Also, try to add some spice in your foods with spices like turmeric, cumin, garlic, and pepper.  Beans and lentils will be great for your protein source.

And finally, you need to breathe and breathe well.  It is extremely important to focus on deep inhalations for as long as possible.  Take a few minutes to simply center yourself on breathing into your belly.  Really watch and feel your stomach expand and let go with each breath.  Even better, join a meditation or restorative yoga class.

Your goal: be with friends and family, exercise, breathe, and add some spice to the diet.
